| History ofValentines Day On the eve of the festival of Lupercalia, in ancient Rome, the names of young girls were written on slips of paper and place in jars. Each young man drew a slip and the girl he chose was to be his love for the year. The holiday was named Valentines Day after a priest in Rome named Valentine. Valentine disobeyed the orders of the Emporeror Claudius II who had ordered soldiers not to marry as it would make them want to stay home and not fight his wars. Valentine secretly married the young couples anyway. He was caught and beheaded on February 14th the eve of the Roman holiday Lupercalia. After his death, Valentine was named a saint. As Rome became more Christian, the holiday was moved to the 14th. Now the holiday honored Saint Valentine instead of Lupercus. |
